The San Cristoforo d'oro to Reasearch and the excellences of our territory

Six San Cristoforo gold medals will be awarded on Sunday, July 24, at 5:00 pm at the Teatro dei Differenti in Barga.

This year, the city administration has decided to award three fellow citizens who have distinguished themselves in research and education: Giancarlo Cella and Paolo Ruggi for their contribution to the discovery of the century, that is to say the discovery of gravitational waves, ripples in the fabric of spacetime that were first anticipated by Albert Einstein a century ago; Francesco Tolari, professor of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pisa, who was awarded the title of the Ordine del Cherubino (The Order of the Cherubim). This award and recognition goes to those scholars who have contributed to increase the University's prestige thanks to their particular scientific and cultural merits or for their contribution to the life and functioning of the same institution.

Enhancing the territory’s excellences, the town council has also decided to award three associations that work for the community of Barga and who this year have reached an important milestone: The Alpini Group of Barga which celebrate their 80th anniversary, the Barga Chapter of the Italian Alpino Club, and the cultural association of the Polentari of Filecchio now in their 50th year.
