Memorial Day in Lucca and its province

Like every year, the Province and Municipality of Lucca, with the collaboration of the Historical Institute of the Resistance and the Modern Age, together with many municipalities of the territory, have coordinated a rich program of initiatives to celebrate the 27th of January - Memorial Day.

This year Memorial Day is dedicated to a topic, that of childhood, with two exhibitions. This year, memorial day is dedicated to the topic of childhood and will feature two exhibits. The first exhibit, “Anne Frank, a contemporary story”, narrates the Holocaust with a fundamentally biographical view. The exhibit was inaugurated on Wednesday, January 18 in Lucca (Palazzo Ducale) where it will remain until February 11. The exhibit will then be available in Capannori from February 15 to March 1, then will travel to Forte dei Marmi from March 7-22 and will conclude in Castiglione di Garfagnana from March 25 to April 18.

The second exhibition entitled “In the wind and in our memory, stories of Jewish children during the Holocaust in the Province of Lucca” retraces, through narratives, testimonials and photographs, stories of some of the Jewish children of the Province of Lucca who faced the tragedy of deportation. The exhibit opens today at Palazzo Ducale and will be open to the public from January 26 to February 11, in Capannori (January 27 to February 16) then moving to Bagni di Lucca (February 15-March 5), Barga (March 9-April 2), Villa Basilica (March 18-April 8), Borgo a Mozzano (April 5-19), Massarosa, and in May in Castiglione di Garfagnana.

Individual municipalities of the Garfagnana and Serchio Valley will also promote numerous events. Gatherings with students, film screenings, moments of reflection and commemorative ceremonies are all part of this program to help preserve the memory of some of the most horrific events of our history.
